Nicole N. is Emily’s best friend, and mother to her Shih-Tzu, Sommer. They almost always can be found by each other’s side with Sommer traveling in either her couture dog carrier or her hot-pink stroller. Q: Name three things we’d NEVER find in your closet!

A: A skeleton, wire hangers and a turtleneck!

Q: Name three ways that raising a dog is similar to raising a kid. How is it different? 

A: Raising a dog teaches you responsibility and accountability. They have to be potty trained, and dogs get stubborn as they get older…just like kids!

The difference is there are no breast pumps or diapers involved, and you can leave them at home by themselves at a young age.

Q: What’s the best way to get on your good side? Bad side? 

A: Be REAL, be yourself…fakes are easy to spot. Tell me about your dog and how much you love it! You will definitely get on my bad side if you talk negatively about Sommer, my family and/or my friends.  Once you get on my bad side…it is hard to get back on my good side!:)

Q: If Sommer could speak, she’d say….

A: Actually, Sommer and I do talk to each other. But for people who don’t understand….Here are three questions Sommer asks the most:

“I get to go bye-bye with you…right?”

“Will you please get this hair out of my eyes?!?”

“I am getting really tired…when can we go nite-nite?”

Q: Do you ever use Sommer as an excuse to get out of plans? 

A: Yes! If Sommer can’t go…I don’t go!

Q: How are Southern women different from other women?

A: Southern women are very passionate about what they believe in.  They stand their ground, they can get their point across with the cut of their eyes, and they can put you in your place. This is all done in their Southern way, with a smile before you even know what hit you! They would never be seen at the Piggly Wiggly without MAKEUP….and they LOVE THEIR DADDY!!!

Q: Are there any differences between being in a mommy clique and being in a high-school clique?

A: The only difference is age…it is the same cattiness and jealousy, just a different day, IF that is the world you live in! I have always tried not to be “cliquey” and to be nice to everyone. I have never been a competitive person. The only person I compete against is myself. I strive to be the best that I can be – for ME!!! I would never have believed these mommy cliques existed if I had not experienced it for myself! Competing against other women to prove yourself superior is an emotional drainer!

Every mommy clique has one – the queen bee! And Emily from “Pretty Wicked Moms” is the group’s confident leader. While the popular fashionista and high-end boutique owner would “rather slit her throat than have a playdate,” she does love being a mom to her two-year-old daughter, Amzie. Read on to hear Emily’s take on getting on her “bad side,” plus her beauty and style don’ts for moms and her own parenting fails.

Q: Have you ever used your kids as an excuse to get out of something? Explain!

A: OMG, have I? Of course I have used my child as an excuse to get out of something! Every parent has – and if they say they haven’t, they are lying!! For example, I have had several nights where I would have dinner plans with friends, and at the last minute, after a long day of work, I didn’t want to go. I have called and acted as if my nanny had something come up or somewhere to be and it was too late in the evening to find a sitter. It is always a good excuse, because it’s not like one of your friends would ever say, “Well, I will keep her and you just go out with the girls” or “Just bring her to dinner with us”! Hahaha So that one works like a charm.

Q: What’s the best way to get out of a playdate?

A: I would say Amzie was sick and I didn’t want to bring her around the other kids and get them sick.

Q: Name your three biggest parenting fails!

1. Letting Amzie sleep in the bed with my husband and me from the day she arrived home from the hospital, because getting her out was a process.

2. Working too much. I beat myself up about it a lot and I try to consciously balance it, but I am human and I fail sometimes.

3. Letting Amzie still have her pacifier. I have taken it away, but I have not been strict enough about it when she gets sleepy or sick.

Q: What are three things every “Wicked Mom” should have in her handbag?

A: Lipgloss, credit card, and cell phone.

Q: Name three beauty and style “DON’Ts” for moms.

1. Do NOT try to dress like a nun now because you have a child. I am a big believer in maintaining yourself and not going into the “I’m a mom” funk where you dress like a grandmother. BY NO MEANS do I think you should look trashy or cheap by showing off all your assets, but staying stylish and wearing things that flatter your figure is the way to go.

2. Do NOT lose “yourself” when you become a mom. There is honestly nothing more beautiful than a confident woman with her own identity. Yes, kids change you to a certain degree, but being able to balance your child, your husband, life, etc. while staying true to who you are is super important. There isn’t enough makeup or clothing out there for a woman who loses herself. You can’t hide that. You have to feel good about yourself to keep your swagger and the rest falls into play. In my opinion, it makes you a better mom and wife when you feel good about yourself.

3. I CANNOT stand when women have children and they wear their workout clothes all day, every day. We get it, you worked out today. But find time to take your workout clothes off and put yourself in something stylish for the day and then continue your routine, whether it is carpooling or whatever.

 Q: What’s the best way to get on your good side? Bad side?

A: The best way to get on my good side is just being real. I don’t like when people pretend to have everything in common with me. We don’t have to agree on everything, and if you have your own individuality and opinion, then I like that. You always know that person will have the courage to stand up for you as a friend when you aren’t around.

The best way to get on my bad side is to talk behind my back. Period, end of sentence.

 Q: What are your hopes and dreams for Amzie?

A: My hopes and dreams for Amzie are endless. Ultimately, I want to make sure that she follows her heart and becomes what she wants to become one day. I want her to always remember to be proud of where she came from and thankful for everything she has and to remember her morals and values. I realize she is only two years old, but she is such a strong, vivacious and independent little girl. I know she is the complete recipe for a super successful woman, but I want her to always stay true to herself and follow her dreams and not mine. I would love for her to be in fashion, of course, and would love nothing more for her to want to take Swank and build it into a “fashion powerhouse.” I work so hard now, so Swank is an opportunity for her one day, if she wants to take over my business. Believe me, I would be overcome with joy. However, if she takes a completely different route in life, I will support her every step of the way!
Q: What’s the best way to discipline kids?

A: I believe in teaching your kids right from wrong and getting them to use their manners – “yes, ma’am” and “no ma’am,” “please” and “thank you.” We all know that doesn’t work out so well, so I am strict with Amzie – I tell her something once and then I give her “the look” so she knows I mean what I am saying. If she continues to test me, I threaten her with a spanking, and if she pushes it even further, I will spank her. It’s the way I was raised. Some people agree with spanking their children and some don’t. Everyone has their own way, but if you really want to get their attention and you want them to KNOW YOU MEAN BUSINESS, you have to spank sometimes. It has worked the best for Amzie, because she is stubborn and a lot like me, and that is what always worked on me as a kid. Who is to say that “the look” won’t work on my next child someday!

“The Doggy Mom”

Currently residing in Birmingham, Alabama, Nicole N. is the mother to her Shih-Tzu, Sommer. What does it mean to be a “Wicked Mom”?
People often interoperate wicked as a bad thing, but to me a “Wicked Mom” is the “Cool Mom” that all the kids like to hang around because she is fun, but she does have boundaries. She gives her kids room to move, but knows when and how to keep them in-line!

How has being a mother changed your life?
Dogs do and will change your life. Sommer’s loyalty and companionship has given me a different perspective on life, love, friendship and motherhood.

What makes you different than all the other moms?
I can put a leash on my child, and it is LEGAL!

What is the most lavish thing you’ve done for your child?
I must say Sommer lives a lavish life, and I love pampering her! She enjoys the luxury of frequent spa days at Fancy Fur with conditioning hot oil treatments, and she loves having her hair flat ironed. From being toted her in her couture dog carrier and pushed in her hot pink stroller to her Swarovski Crystal dog bowls, leashes and collars and the latest doggies fashions, Sommer is a high-maintenance pooch that is “queen of our house.” But Sommer’s most lavish accessory is her diamond dog bone necklace. (Even though with all her fur you can’t really see when she wears it!)

What do you do for fun?
I love spending time and playing with my nieces and nephews—nothing is more fun or brings out your inner child more than jumping on the trampoline, playing dress up, building a fort and the view from a swing!

Originally from Mississippi and having moved recently to Atlanta with her husband Pete and their daughter Amzie, Emily can be found juggling motherhood and managing her fashion boutique, Swank, round the clock. Her love of fashion and her ambition to succeed began at a young age, first completing an internship with Donna Karan in New York City and then working at Saks Incorporated’s Parisian division as an assistant buyer. What does it mean to be a “Wicked Mom”?
A bad-ass mom who is successful, who can multi task, who can juggle family, work and friends, and also handle all of life’s curve balls—while standing tall in 5-inch designer heels.

How has being a mother changed your life?
I realized very quickly that life wasn’t about “just me” anymore. It is now about Amzie and her every need. Motherhood has forced me to focus on someone else’s future, other than my own. My life revolves around her!! She has enabled me to learn even more strengths I have, while dealing with fears I never knew existed. It has grounded me and made me a better person and business woman. Every single day I look at that precious face of hers, and I am reminded what a gift Amzie is to me and how life without her would be unimaginable.

What makes you different than all the other moms?
I don’t try to mold Amzie into anyone she is not! I give her the freedom to discover her own individuality. I am not a mom who follows what other moms are doing, nor do I try to be a “by the book” mom. I just try to be the best mom I can be. Being a leader is who I am and have always been; therefore, I don’t try to compete with the status quo and never will.

What is the most lavish thing you’ve done for your child?
Honestly, everything I do for Amzie could be considered lavish. I enjoy making her birthday parties and all holidays over-the-top for my little princess! There is nothing better than seeing her precious face light up. I have always been a believer in “Go Big or Go Home.” All parents should want the best of the best for their children; however, I make sure to teach Amzie to be thankful for these blessings.

What do you do for fun?
I love to travel, especially to exotic locales….it is my ultimate favorite thing in the world. It makes it even more fun when you travel with family and best friends. I don’t have time for hobbies; however, I’m fortunate enough to enjoy what I do for a living so much, that it is considered a hobby to me! Guiltiest pleasure? Laying in bed ALL DAY and “fatting out” on pizza, candy and all things sweet, while watching movies back to back.
